A Few Supplements to Improve A Dry Food Diet
As most of our customers know if they shop for their pet’s food at Beastie Boutique, we are advocates for a fresher food diet for your pet as we believe this is the best way to receive optimal nutrition.
When I say fresher food, that doesn’t mean your pet can only get that from a balanced raw-meat diet, but also a lightly cooked balanced diet or a canned food diet.
Of course, if you only have one pet and that one pet is 10 to 15 pounds, it’s easy to choose a fresher food diet because of the amount of food your pet eats, the cost of the food is a little more reasonable.
We also understand that not everyone can afford to feed just an exclusive fresh food diet. Especially if you have large dogs or multiple little dogs/cats. So we recommend that if you can increase the fresher food to at least 50 percent (or more) your pet will reap the benefits of a fresher food diet.
So with all that said, if you can only afford a dry kibble or choose to feed only a dry food, there are a few things to consider so that your pet can maintain good health.
-
Make sure you buy a higher quality kibble that is not full of cheap fillers or is too high carbed. Even a grain-free food, can still have too many carbs for your pet. I like to see the protein at around at least 30 percent for a dog and 40 percent for a cat.
Add Omega 3 Fatty Acids from a marine sources. Stick with smaller fish or krill oil. If you feed a dry food and it says it contains omega 3 fatty acids they are probably null and void from the cooking processes.
Add Digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes help break down and process carbs, fats and proteins that your dog and cats are eating. They will help dogs and cats that are gassy, burping, loose stools, etc. Digestive enzymes help to break down a dry food which is already hard for you pet to process.
Add Probiotics. Probiotics are positive, beneficial, good gut bacteria that help keep the flora, (the good to bad bacteria ratio) balanced and healthy.
We have also found that cats that are on probiotics and enzymes throw up less.
Adding good quality Omega 3 Fatty acids, enzymes and probiotics will not only help improve the bio-availability of some of the nutrients in your dry food but will also add to dry food what it is lacking for overall health and well being.
We carry several different lines of enzymes and probiotics. Animal Essentials has a formula with both, so it is very easy to give to your pet.
We also carry Omega 3’s both in a Sardine oil and a Salmon Oil.
