Easter and the danger with our pets

Easter is just around the corner so here are a few tips to keep in mind to keep your pet safe while you are enjoying this festive holiday.  If you have children and if you engage in the fun of searching for those elusive eggs and/or Easter baskets, keep in mind that what may be fun and exciting to you and your child will also be of interest to your pet.

The plastic eggs which hold those wonderful sweet treats, may look like a toy in which your cat or dog would take interest in playing with.  Keep in mind, if they chew or break the plastic and swallow it, this can lead to a trip to the vets office.

Most of us know that chocolate can make our dogs sick, so do not forget that when you're on your way out the door to see family or friends, to put the Easter basket out of reach of your pooch.

Keep in mind that Lilies are one of the most poisonous flowers for pets. If a cat bites into a lily, they can experience kidney failure in less than two days if not treated.  If you have a lot of pets in your home, and you feel you need to have lilies, try decorating with fake lilies or a different type of flower.

There is nothing like experiencing the excitement of our kids when we give them a new pet during the holidays.  Chicks, bunnies, puppies are all very popular to give during the Easter holiday but the Humane Society of the United States warns against this as there are so many abandoned pets after the newness wares off.  So if you are going to give a pet, make sure you have given it careful thought as to what all goes into taking care of that pet.  After careful consideration, if you decide to add one of these animals to your family, consider turning to a shelter or rescue group first, before buying from a pet store or breeder.

Wishing you all a very safe holiday for both you and your pets.
